Weekly Blog 8: LightNight at Home

Friday 15th May would have been LightNight 2020, the busiest night of the year at Bluecoat when people from across the region join us for an evening of art, music, activities and fun.

While we shall miss welcoming you all to our building, we're excited to be taking part in LightNight at Home on Friday 15 May. Join us on social media from 5pm as we create the LightNight experience online, with an evening of 'Home' inspired films, music and activities.

In this week's blog take a look at our complete #LightNightathome programme, bringing a taste of all the usual flavours of the evening straight to your living room.

Down the Melting Pot

A programme of short films, Down the Melting Pot, curated by Nien-Ting Chen and Jaxton Su, explores the idea of residency in a foreign city through the perspectives of young international contemporary artists.

Commissioned for LightNight 2020, this was to be shown at Bluecoat and will be available at a future date. Watch the trailer here.

Stay tuned to our social media on LightNight for a special screening of Mao Mao's film Happy Kawaii Friends, one of the films from Down the Melting Pot.

Bluecoat: A Home for Artists

Bluecoat has been a home for working artists since 1907, when a group of independent art students moved into the building.

LightNight usually provides an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see our working artist studios. Take a virtual tour with this slideshow presenting photos of artists in their Bluecoat studios from 1930s to the present, selected from our archive, together with more recent images.

They reflect a range of artistic practice in our studios, both rented and residency spaces, as well as our popular printmaking facilities.

Make Yourself at Home Playlist by Bryan Biggs

Make yourself at home with this playlist compiled by our Artistic Director (and regular LightNight DJ) Bryan Biggs.

The theme is home – both the physical spaces we dwell in and the metaphorical home we leave behind, or yearn to return to. An eclectic mix of pop, soul, folk, rock, prog, psychedelia, blues, reggae and R’n’B.

Listen on Youtube here.      |      Listen on Spotify here.

Read more about Bryan's selection here.

Kiara Mohamed - Home

We are delighted to premiere Liverpool based artist Kiara Mohamed's latest film, Home. Mohamed reflects on notions of home, vulnerability and care in the first few weeks of the pandemic. Her poetic and mesmerising film was shot using a drone, flown above her Liverpool 8 neighbourhood Toxteth.

Watch the film here.

Twisted Dragon Tales with Gav Cross

Do you believe in Dragons? Storyteller Gav Cross (who you might recognise from previous LightNight family events) joined us on Facebook last week for a live storytelling session with added teeth, all about these fantastical beasts.

If you missed Gav the first time don't worry, you can watch again on our Facebook page here, and entertain the family at home with stories that bite back!

Gav is hosting live storytelling sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at 3pm on his Youtube channel.

Root House Plants & Family Activity

We're missing the vibrancy our creative traders bring to our building. Root House Plants have brought a little slice of horticultural heaven to our front courtyard since they opened in December 2017. We spoke to founder Lisa Price last week to find out how they are getting on.

Lisa said "We're missing Bluecoat and all of our customers but we're still selling online and new stock is coming in. Looking forward to seeing you soon!"

If, like us, you're missing Root House Plants, check out this film made by the talented One Six Films UK one afternoon when the plants had a party of their own in our courtyard!

The Halcyon Syncopators

The Halcyon Syncopators have established themselves as a firm Bluecoat favourite on LightNight with their Big Band sound.

So, sit back, enjoy your favourite drink and imagine yourself in our wonderful garden in a sea of people.

Complete the experience with this 20 minute set of Syncopator classics recorded for Bay TV, including Summertime, Blue Moon and It's Almost like Falling in Love
