Creative retailers at Bluecoat Re-open

As lockdown restrictions begin to ease and non-essential retail opens, the creative retailers at Bluecoat are also starting to open their doors and welcome back customers to their shops. In our new blog, hear from some of the independent businesses at Bluecoat as they reflect on the impact of Covid-19, numerous lockdowns and their hopes for the future.

Popular book shop Kernaghans, ran by husband and wife team Bryan & Alwyn Kernaghan, has been a staple amoung our creative community since they opened at Bluecoat almost ten years ago. Here's what they had to say as they re-open after lockdown:

"We are excited to be opening after such a long slog on the laptop!

Online sales have been helpful, but we realise more than ever that our most natural modus is meeting people face to face. And we are so keen to see 'old faces' as well as new, some of whom we have got to know virtually over these months.

Thank you to all who have had us searching and finding those obscure titles for them, having us restore and have binding work done on books needing new life. It's been a strange but wonderful joy to meet people on our steps for click and collect, and if that method still suits you we are more than happy to oblige.

There's oodles of fresh stock in and already on our shelves and another large haul of fresh stock arriving over the coming weeks. As always, we try to have something for everyone as well as those titles you never knew you needed!"

Kernaghans will be open Tuesday - Friday, 11am - 4pm, Saturday 11am - 5pm and will have Covid-19 safety measures in place such as hand sanitiser, screen dividers, and to allow for social distancing, only 6 people will be allowed in the shop at a time.

Family owned business Lalligrass specialise in arts and crafts from the Himalayas, with one of their directors, Jay, living in the foothills of the Himalayas with his Nepali wife Rama. Shop owners Adam and Laura had to adapt quickly to online shopping when their doors had to close temporarily, here's what Adam had to say:

"Although me and laura have got very good at taking pictures and adding products to the website, due to the unique nature of the products we have struggled to generate sales from the website. So we are over the moon to be open again."

Their fascinating shop offers many handmade and unique items, including a range of beautiful scarves, perfect to keep you warm as you grab a bite to eat outside or enjoy a drink in a beer garden.

In line with Government guidance, Lalligrass have a number of safety measures in place, including mandatory face coverings (where possible), a one way system in the shop and hand sanister for customers.

They're open Monday - Saturday, 10am - 6:30 pm, Sunday, 11am - 5:30 pm.

We’re inspired by the resilience of all of our creative retailers, and the independent businesses in Liverpool, for remaining so positive and determined during such a difficult time. With your support, these small shops will begin to thrive in the aftermath of Covid-19.

We're sorry that we can't open the main building and our cafe and garden yet, but we hope it won't be long before we're welcoming you back to Bluecoat. Keep an eye on our social media and our website for updates.
